LOOKING AFTER THE TRAILER
LOOKING AFTER THE TRAILER
As we're sure you realise, trailers are highly attractive stealable items and need to be looked after, as the hirer you are responsible for the trailer and without proper vigilance it could be stolen along with any of your goods that are inside! The main point of trailer security is deterrent, to make it hard work for the thief and, while this may sound selfish, to make someone else's trailer look the easier option.
It takes only a couple of minutes to steal a trailer if it is not properly secured. This doesn't just apply to when the trailer isn't being used as just calling for fuel (make sure your vehicle has enough fuel in it before you start using the trailer) or a bite to eat could present thieves with an opportunity, the trailer could even be locked onto your tow bar but it might only take a couple of spanners to remove the tow bar from your vehicle!
When unattended ALWAYS attach a wheel clamp even if locked on to your vehicle. Always attach a wheel clamp to a wheel on the rear axle as a front axle can be raised high enough to clear it from the road and make a clamp ineffective. When ever possible a chain through the A frame of the trailer and locked onto an immovable object will be a good deterrent. When a trailer is parked, always try to block it in using a vehicle or something which is hard to move and/or would create a disturbance if moved.
Always THINK about what you're doing with a trailer, where you're going, where and for how long it will be unattended and NEVER UNDERESTIMATE the confidence of thieves. They don't need the cover of night or a trailer left where there's no one about in order to steal it. If not properly secured they'll steal a horse box from a show, a car transporter from a cafe car park or a box van from outside your house while you're loading it up with your possessions.
